Fleas are small wingless parasites that feed on the blood of mammals such as cat, dogs and even humans. As they pierce the skin of their host and feed on the warm blood, this can cause allergic irritating reactions.
With over 60 varieties native to Britain, the most frequent and problematic flea infestations are down to the cat flea (Ctenocephalides canis), but we also come across dog fleas, human fleas, rabbit fleas, bird fleas, hedgehog fleas and mole fleas, but cat fleas are by far the most common.
Despite being called cat fleas, they can live on dogs and are very partial to humans too. Their larvae often live around bedding areas and feed on flakes of skin, dust, debris, dead insects and fur.
What are fleas?
They are small parasitic biting insects that can be as small as 1mm or as large as 8mm. They are often black or brown in colour and with powerful hind legs they can jump vast distances compared to their size to find new sources of blood or escape predators.
Their flat body shape allows them to move around fur and hair relatively easily and also means they can hide in the tiniest gaps – making detection and treatment difficult.
