Dark staining of a mattress indicates an established infestation of bed bugs, the dark stain caused by the excreta of the bedbugs. Bedbugs also excrete an unpleasant odour which you can often smell in rooms that have established infestation of bed bugs. Where there are bed bugs, you will often find small droplets of blood on the sheets.
